GOOG: Google Gives Quickoffice App the Axe

Recent app changes made Quickoffice redundant

Google (GOOG) is pulling the plug on its Quickoffice mobile app.

Google (fisheye)Quickoffice will disappear from Google’s app stores “in coming weeks,” according to a statement from Google. “Existing users with the app can continue to use it, but no features will be added and new users will not be able to install the app,” the tech giant said. Quickoffice had become redundant since Google separated the components of Google Drive into three separate apps earlier this year, ComputerWorld notes.

Google had positioned Quickoffice to compete with Microsoft’s (MSFT) Office mobile productivity suite. Google launched free Quickoffice apps for both Android and Apple’s (AAPL) iOS last year.

In Monday morning trading, GOOG shares were flat. Google stock closed at $577.24 per share on Friday.
