The Pont des Arts footbridge had to be closed on Sunday after the railing fell off from too man “love locks” being left on it.
No one was injured during the love locks incident and the bridge was reopened on Monday. The City of Paris has commented on the matter saying that “an alternative to these locks is a real necessity,” The Telegraph notes.
The section of the Pont des Arts footbridge that collapsed due to the weight of the love locks was only five feet in length. Paris claims there is no risk of the whole bridge collapsing from the love locks’ weight.
Love locks are padlocks left by couples on the bridge’s railing. The lock are a sign of everlasting love and usually have the couples’ names on them. The trend of leaving these padlocks on rails started about five years ago and many railings on other brides are almost completely hidden due to them, reports The Telegraph.
