The Facebook Cop: FB Gifts a Police Officer to California Town

The officer works to keep kids in school

Facebook (FB) is covering the cost of a police officer in its hometown of Menlo Park, Calif.

facebookMary Ferguson is a police officer that has her pay and benefits covered by Facebook. Ferguson’s job is to help the community with keeping kids in school and working with juvenile offenders. She also helps large companies in the area plan for emergencies. The total cost to cover her pay and benefits is $194,000 per year, The Wall Street Journal notes.

Officer Ferguson isn’t the only way that Facebook has helped the local police force. It also donated $200,000 to the construction of a new substation and pays a large part of the location’s $44,000-a-year rent. This has led some to wonder if the company is trying to buy the police’s protection. However, Menlo Park Mayor Ray Mueller claims that the company doesn’t need protection due to its strong security, reports WSJ.

Officer Ferguson’s job to keep kids in school falls in line with Facebook’s efforts to recruit young talent from High Schools. The company pays High School interns roughly $6,000 a month.
