GOOG: Google to Stop Calling Games With In-App Purchases ‘Free’

The changes will be made by the end of September

Google (GOOG) is going to stop labeling games with in-app purchases as free in Europe.

google-googGoogle plans to implement the changes in labeling to games by the end of September. The changes are the result of a deal between the company and the the European Commission (EC). The changes are designed to protect children and families from ridiculous amounts of in-app purchases, Forbes notes.

Google also claims that it will be working to monitor games and apps that don’t meet the EC’s standards. Apple (AAPL) is refusing to budge on the subject and claims that it offers parental controls that go beyond any offered by other companies, reports Forbes.

“In-app purchases are a legitimate business model,” Neelie Kroes, vice president of the EC, told The Verge.  “but it’s essential for app-makers to understand and respect EU law while they develop these new business models.”
