Driverless cars and cars where drivers can regain control of the vehicle will be tested starting next year. The UK will monitor the activity of the self driving car and see how it complies with highway and traffic laws.

“Today’s announcement will see driverless cars take to our streets in less than six months, putting us at the forefront of this transformational technology and opening up new opportunities for our economy and society,” said Business Secretary Vince Cable.

The country will invest £10 million (about $17 million) to finance driverless cars in three cities. The test will take between 18 and 36 months.

The US has already been testing the self driving car for years with more than 700,000 miles covered by driverless cars.
