Takata Airbag Recall: Toyota, Nissan Expand Recall by Millions

Toyota (NYSE:TM) and Nissan have expanded their airbag recall to an additional 6.5 million vehicles.

Airbag recallThe airbags come from Takata, a Japanese supplier. Toyota is recalling 5 million vehicles, 637,000 of which are in the US. The move affects 35 models produced from March 2003 through November 2007.

Nissan is recalling 1.56 million vehicles, 326,000 of which are in the US. The airbag recall affects its Sentra compact, Caravan van and X-Trail sport utility vehicle, made from 2004 through 2007.

Honda (NYSE:HMC) also uses airbags from Takata but the company has yet to make a decision on whether or not it will expand its recall.

Toyota has now recalled 8.1 million vehicles for airbag problems, while Nissan has recalled a total of 4 million.

TM stock is down 0.8% Wednesday. HMC stock is up 0.6%.
