Iconic Bubble Wrap Gets a Redesign, No Longer ‘Pops’

Sealed Air (SEE), the company behind Bubble Wrap, is taking the *pop* out of its product.

bubble-wrapThe new Bubble Wrap is called “iBubble Wrap”. It’s made to be thinner than its previous incarnation and doesn’t pop when squeezed. Instead, the air just moves around between bubbles that are all connected, reports New York Magazine.

The reason that Bubble Wrap got a redesign is that shipping companies weren’t using it anymore. These companies complained that it was too large and bulky to use and stopped buying it. The old style of Bubble wrap that pops can still be bought, but may one day disappear, New York Magazine notes.

The new version of Bubble Wrap being sold to shipping companies takes up much less space. This is because the product isn’t aired up before it’s sold. Now shippers have a pump that can be used to fill the plastic bubbles with air before using them to pack an item, reports The Wall Street Journal.
