Study: Apple Peels, Green Tomatoes Could Prevent Muscle Aging

Old mice saw a 10% increase in muscle mass and 30% increase in strength

New research shows that apple peels and green tomatoes could prevent muscle aging.

Apple Peels

Each of these contains a natural compound — different one for each one — that may fight the affects of aging on muscles. Emmyon, Inc. — a biotechnology company based at the University of Iowa — conducted the study.

The study was conducted on elderly mice. These animals experienced a 10% increase in muscle mass and 30% increase in strength.

Ursolic acid is found and tomatidine is in green tomatoes–both chemicals can prevent acute muscle wasting caused by starvation and inactivity. They report the results in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

“Based on these results, ursolic acid and tomatidine appear to have a lot of potential as tools for dealing with muscle weakness and atrophy during aging,” Adams says.
