SeaWorld Entertainment Inc (SEAS) has announced that it’s putting an end to its orca breeding program.
News that SeaWorld would end its orca breeding program was announced by CEO Joel Manby in a op-ed piece in The Los Angeles Times. In the piece, he said that the program will end this year and that orca theatrical shows will also stop.
Manby went on to say that SeaWorld hasn’t captured orca from the wild in over four decades. This combined with the end of the breeding program will make the current generation of ocra the last held in captivity by the company.
The SeaWorld CEO said that the company won’t be releasing the orca into the wild. Most were born in captivity and he notes that the attempt to set Kieko, the wild-born orca that starred in Free Willy, free was a failure.
The company caught flak for its alleged mistreatment of orca in a documentary titled Blackfish that was released in 2013.
