Cuban-Americans currently can’t sail to Cuba on Carnival Corp (CCL) cruises heading to the country.
The decision to now allow Cuban-Americans on cruises travelling to Cuba wasn’t one made by Carnival. The decision came from Cuba and it’s related to a law that only allows people born in Cuba to enter the country via plane.
Carnival said it didn’t want a ban on Cuban-American travelers, but that Cuba still required the law to be followed. Two Cuban-Americans have filed a lawsuit against CCL because they claim that this restriction violates federal civil rights laws, reports CNN.
Carnival said that it’s continuing to work with Cuba to have the restrictions removed prior to the first cruise to the country on May 1. It’s even letting Cuban-Americans sign up for the cruises now, but will delay them if Cuba doesn’t change its stance on the matter.
