The new facility is named the Google AI China Center. The company says that only a few researchers will wok at the location, but that it will be hiring hundreds of engineers from China. It didn’t say exactly how many people it would hire, but it is still searching for new employees.

The opening of the new AI research lab in China may show that the company is dedicated to expanding its business into the country. This comes after its disagreements with the government in 2010 over its search engine. However, the new effort could be part of a plan to build trust by bringing jobs to the country.

The decision to open its new research lab in China is also likely part of the company’s effort to get on the government’s good side. China has been focusing on AI technology lately and wants to turn it into a $60 billion industry by 2025. Google helping with that may open the doors for further pushes into the country with its other businesses, reports Bloomberg.

Google will be leaving its China lab in the hands of Fei-Fei Li and Jia Li. Fei-Fei Li is the chief Scientist of AI and machine learning at Google Cloud. Jia Li is the head of research and development at Google Cloud AI. Fei-Fei Li says this new location will work with other researchers in China to advance AI for everyone.

As of this writing, William White did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
