At StateoftheMarkets.com, we strive to “own the best and ignore the rest” in our equity portfolios. Toward this end, each day we search our database for a “top stock” (a top rated company in terms of earnings strength as well as company and industry performance) that presents a strong technical “set up” and a good entry point.
In short, when our equity team is looking to add a stock to one of our portfolios, the “bull’s eye” stock shown below is generally their first choice.
|Company||Symbol||Industry||Stock Rating||YTD% Gain||S.T. Stop Loss|
|Genesee & Wyoming||GWR||Railroads||9.3||+11.31%||$87.83|
Why We Like The Stock:
Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) is our most compelling buy today due to the fact that it is a top rated stock (in terms of earnings strength and company/industry performance) with a positive technical set-up. Railroads have had a pretty good year so far, as evidenced in stocks like Union Pacific (UNP), Norfolk Southern (NSC), and Kansas City Southern (KSU). GWR didn’t have a pretty month in April, but it seems to have righted the ship and is continuing its long-term trend higher. The stock has support right below the 50-day moving average, and has based at current prices right above it. We like GWR for a run back to March highs near $95. We would be buyers as long as it stays above the 50-day moving average at $87.83.
We Would Be Buyers:
At the current price (~$89.30 or lower).
Genesee & Wyoming Inc. owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads and provides railcar switching and other rail-related services in the United States, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, the Company operates a longer-haul railroad that runs approximately 1,400 miles between Tarcoola in South Australia and Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia.
