Heee’s back!

Nearly 2 years after resigning from Congress in the midst of a Twitter-photo scandal, former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner announced — via a YouTube video — he will run for Mayor of New York City.

Weiner acknowledged in the video that “I made some big mistakes and I know I let a lot of people down, but I’ve also learned some tough lessons.”

Weiner gained notoriety after a picture of a man’s “junk” appeared on his Twitter account in early 2011. After initially claiming his account had been hacked, more pictures from his account became public, including one of Weiner bare-chested in his Congressional office.

Weiner eventually ‘fessed up that he’d been exchanging racy photos and tweets with several women, and the married Congressman resigned his office in June.

Weiner has remained in the background since the incident, however in an April New York Times magazine piece, Weiner mentioned he was thinking about getting back into politics, and had done polling to determine if the idea was feasible.

Weiner has since created a new Twitter account, a booklet focused on his policy goals entitled “Keys to the City“, and gone on local television to help both improve his image and lay out his credentials for office.

Weiner’s move back to politics stars in September, with New York’s Democratic Party primary election. Weiner, who Quinnipiac University polls show is running second behind New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, already packs a war chest of $4.8 million according[1] to the Associated Press, with another $1 million more in public matching-funds possible.
