Coulter Murder Joke Leads to Backlash

NewLetters[1]Ann Coulter is at it again.

The conservative columnist has stirred up more controversy after her latest column, posted on her web site and Fox Nation’s web site, suggested that Sen. John McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, be murdered[2].

More specifically, Coulter framed it as a response to MSNBC commentator Martin Bashir, who had earlier wondered if Republican senators would only vote for gun control bills if members of their families were killed by guns. Coulter had this reply:

“MSNBC’s Martin Bashir suggested that Republican senators need to have a member of their families killed for them to support the Democrats’ gun proposals. (Let’s start with Meghan McCain!)”

As a result, Fox Nation pulled the offending column[3] from its web site.

Meghan McCain herself also fired back on Twitter, saying “Apparently Ann Coulter made a joke about me being killed in a recent column. I should expect nothing less but disgusted regardless.” and “My father is a very famous politician. My family gets a lot of threats. Joking about me being killed really isn’t funny or appropriate.”

John McCain’s wife, Cindy, also responded on Twitter. “Ann Coulter have one of your family members threatened. See how you feel!” she said.

Where does the animosity between Meghan McCain and Coulter come from? A few years back, McCain wrote a column for The Daily Beast criticizing the Republican Party in general, and Ann Coulter in particular. She cited Coulter as someone who perpetuated negative stereotypes about Republican women, finding her “offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time.”

Not surprisingly, Coulter had no comment for either of the McCain women, and her representatives said she was unavailable for comments.
