It seems no one is immune for the temptation to tweet[1].

The nation’s forty-first president, George H.W. Bush, who left office in January 1993, just as the Internet was gaining widespread public notice, sent out his very first tweet on Tuesday, CNN has confirmed.

Now 89 years old, and reportedly in poor health, the former leader of the free world and father of the forty-third president of the United States, took to Twitter (TWTR[4]) at @GeorgeHWBush to honor the late South African leader Nelson Mandela[5], who died this week at the age of 95.

Saying that President Mandela “and his countrymen, are in our prayers,” Bush tweeted that his regret that he and his wife Barbara were unable to accompany President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to Mandela’s memorial service.

Spokespeople for the former president say Bush could not attend the ceremonies due to his advanced age and the lengthy trip to South Africa. His son, George W. Bush — who has not yet taken up Twitter — and former First Lady Laura Bush did make the trip with the current first family and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.
