Republicans proposed a bill this week that prohibits recipients of public assistance payments and food stamps can’t use their electronic benefit cards for cash in certain places. These include liquor stores, gun shops, casinos and now marijuana dispensaries because it wouldn’t be a good use of taxpayer money.

The legalization of cannabis for recreational use began Jan. 1 in Colorado but officials want to make sure that food stamps are not used for legal marijuana with the bill. Senate Bill 37 would follow federal law by banning public EBT use at adult-oriented entertainment establishments.

A hearing date for the bill has yet to be determined.
