The Republican National Convention will see former presidential candidates, GOP governors in crucial swing states, and the party’s rising stars speak in headline spots when the convention gets under way in Tampa Bay, Fla. from August 27-30.
Former 2008 Republican presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and the Republicans’ 2008 presidential nominee John McCain will receive prime speaking slots during the convention, as will Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. Scott and Kasich will almost certainly be drumming up GOP support for two of the most important swing states in this election, while Haley and Martinez are the first females to serve as governor of their respective states.
Also on the speaking list is former Secretary of State and potential vice presidential candidate Condoleezza Rice.
As big as the names mentioned are, the list released was not a complete one. Rumors are circulating that Romney will name his running mate by the end of the week, and his vice presidential candidate will be given an opportunity to make a prime time speech.
With that in mind, the list of prominent Republicans not yet named as convention speakers conveniently doubles as a list of possible VP nominees: Sen. Marco Rubio, Fla.; Sen. Rob Portman, Oh.; Rep. Paul Ryan, Wis.; Gov. Bobby Jindal, La.; Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, Va.; Sen. Kelly Ayotte, N.H.; and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Other potential speakers not yet named include 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, House Speaker John Boehner, and Senate candidate Ted Cruz.
At this point, the RNC has not said on what days or times these headline speakers will give their speeches. Nor has the convention decided who the keynote speaker is. That decision will be made closer to the convention.
