McCain Caught iPhone Gaming During Syria Hearing

NewLetters[1]It seems even U.S. senators get bored during long meetings. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was busted by a Washington Post photographer today playing poker on his iPhone[2] during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on military action in Syria.

During the meeting, McCain and other committee members talked with Obama’s defense officials[3], including Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey. McCain did speak during the hearing, but apparently was unable to pay attention during the full three and a half hour meeting.

In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, he explained why he had been playing poker during the meeting.

“As much as I like to always listen with rapt attention constantly (to) remarks of my colleagues over a three and a half period, occasionally I get a little bored and so I resorted…But the worst thing about it is I lost thousands of dollars in this game.”

The money, McCain reassured the host, was not real.

McCain also took to Twitter once the photograph was posted on the Washington Post’s web site, issuing a mea culpa of sorts:
