Obama & Campaign Get a Little Edgy

If Barack Obama thought he had caught hell from conservatives for his stimulus package, the Affordable Care Act, or his administration’s reaction to the consulate attack in Libya, well, he ain’t seen nothing yet.

[1]In a recently published interview with Rolling Stone, one of the journalists interviewing the president in the Oval Office told Obama that his six-year-old sun supported him. Obama’s response?

“You know, kids have good instincts. They look at the other guy and say, ‘Well, that’s a bullshitter, I can tell.’ “

Barack Obama’s words — or one profane word in particular — got conservatives up in arms[2]. The Drudge Report posted a picture of Obama yesterday with the profanity under him, and their Twitter feed also used a variant of the phrase for a couple of tweets.

But that wasn’t the only outrage Obama faced from conservatives yesterday. A new Obama ad, starring Lena Dunham from HBO’s Girls, featured the actress comparing the first time voting to losing one’s virginity[3]. She concluded the video by saying:

“My first time voting was amazing. There’s a line in the sand. Before I was a girl, now I was a woman. I went to the polling station, I pulled back the curtain. I voted for Barack Obama.”

In response, Republican strategist Kellyanne Conway said, “The more we talk about it in this campaign, the more insulting it is to women. They can do the math. Not everything has to be about biology.”

Lauren Thompson, from the Media Research Center, said, “This ad is inappropriate because it is sexualizing the voting process. This isn’t an ad the average family would want their daughters to see.”

Liberals have defended the ad, saying it was “charming and provocative[4].” They also pointed out that the ad was online-only, and meant to be passed around among college age voters and not necessarily be viewed in prime-time on TV.
