Obamacare Enrollment Hits 5M Milestone

Obamacare630[1]According to White House officials, Obamacare enrollments have surged since the start of the month[2].

Over the past weekend, the government says 1 million people visited the federal health insurance exchange, the most traffic since December.  The Obama administration says the number of people who have enrolled in private health insurance plans under Obamacare has now exceeded five million, Reuters notes.

The rise in Obamacare enrollments comes as the Mar. 31 deadline for enrollments under the Affordable Care Act looms.

Still, with just two weeks to go, the total number of Obamacare enrollments remains well below the 7 million goal outlined by the government last year. The new Obamacare enrollment numbers did not break down enrollee demographics or specify how many people had both enrolled for insurance and actually paid their first premium.

Attracting younger and healthier enrollees is critical to the success of Obamacare since they will largely finance the medical costs of older and sicker enrollees.

Republicans have repeatedly called for the repeal of Obamacare and have promised to make the law the focus of 2014 congressional election campaigns.
