Oops! Biden Likely Regrets ‘Buried’ Middle Class Remark

[1]Add another mistake to the list of gaffes[2] that Vice President Joe Biden has made.

During a campaign speech yesterday in North Carolina, Biden had the following to say about the middle class and claims that Mitt Romney would raise taxes on them: “How they can justify … raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried the last four years?”

Of course, Barack Obama has been the president for the past four years, and sharp Republicans quickly jumped on the statement[3]. Mitt Romney tweeted “Agree with @JoeBiden, the middle class has been buried the last 4 years, which is why we need a change in November #CantAfford4More.” Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, also mentioned the comments at a campaign stop in Iowa.

Obama’s campaign just as swiftly struck back to try and minimize the damage[4]. His deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, went on MSNBC to do damage control.

“Well if you look at what the vice president said and what he’s been saying on the campaign trail is that the middle class has been buried by the exact same policies that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to go back to.”

Later in the day yesterday, Biden reworded his comments, saying the middle class had been buried under policies pushed by Romney and Ryan, much like Cutter did.

In a sign of how quickly news spreads, Romney’s campaign has already released an online ad of Biden’s comments, along with Romney and Ryan criticizing the Obama campaign over its treatment of the middle class. To view it, check out the embedded video below.
