Poll Finds Romney Facing Enthusiam Gap With Obama

[1]One of the major talking points in this election cycle has been whether or not Barack Obama can capture the energy of his 2008 campaign, famously encapsulated in Shepherd Fairey’s “Hope” poster[2]. The Obama campaign has worried that the upcoming election, recently given the motto “Forward[3]“, will struggle to maintain that enthusiasm in the wake of lingering economic issues.

Whether or not Obama can rekindle that past enthusiasm, he appears to still have an advantage over presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney. A recent Washington Post/ABC News poll found that 93% of Obama supporters were enthusiastic[4] about voting for him, compared to 75% for Romney backers.

The numbers are nearly the same as those taken from a similar poll in 2008, where Obama had enthusiastic support from 91% of his supporters, compared to 74% for McCain supporters.

Another interesting tidbit from the poll was how voters felt about Romney’s work with Bain Capital. Asked about his work “buying and restructuring companies”, 21% said it was a major reason to vote against him, with another 21% saying it was a major reason to vote for him. For 54% of those polled, it wasn’t a factor at all.
