Roseanne Barr Announces Run for President

[1]As a TV mom on the hit television show Roseanne, Roseanne Barr embodied both a blue-collar worker and mother. Now, Barr wants to stand up for the 99%, announcing that she is seeking the Green Party nomination for president[2].

In her announcement, Barr heaped scorn on both parties, stating “[t]he Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants — bought and paid for by the 1% — who are not doing what’s in the best interest of the American people.”

Barr made headlines in 2008 for criticizing Oprah Winfrey for endorsing Barack Obama, and said she believed there was little difference between him and then-President George W. Bush.  She also later said that Obama was unelectable and would result in the election of “the most racist right wing republican ever.”

Barr will be running for the Green Party nomination against activist Jill Stein[3]. In 2008, the party nominated former Georgia Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney to run for president. The most famous and successful Green Party candidate, though,  was consumer advocate Ralph Nader. In 2000, Nader placed third in the presidential election with 2.7% of the popular vote and was blamed by some Democrats for spoiling the election.

How will Barr fare in her attempts to win the Green Party nomination? How much impact can she — or the Green Party — have on the election? Let us know what you think at
