Sheryl Sandberg Running for Senate? Not So Fast …

Is Facebook (FB[1]) COO Sheryl Sandberg preparing to campaign for a U.S. Senate Seat[2]? Maybe not.

Sheryl Sandberg[3]

On Monday, the U.K. Daily Mail reported that source in the “inner circle” of Sheryl Sandberg said the FB COO wanted to “find a seat” in the senate by 2016. That made a challenge to California Senator Barbara Boxer, whose current term expires in 2016, her most likely option. The term of Boxer’s fellow U.S. senator from California, Dianne Feinstein, runs until 2018.

However, within hours of posting the original story, the Mail said that another source close to Sheryl Sandberg had dismissed the report, calling it “100% untrue.”

The Mail noted that with a personal fortune of more than $1 billion, Sheryl Sandberg could personally bankroll the estimated $30 million to $40 million cost of a senate campaign.

However, Sheryl Sandberg appeared to cast cold water on speculation that she would enter politics during a media interview in January while attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Sheryl Sandberg was quoted as saying that politics was “not for me,” though she agreed to the proposition that “we need more women in politics.”
