Owners of an Apple (AAPL[1]) iPhone will soon be able to unlock and start[2] their Tesla Motors (TSLA[3]) Model S.

tesla-tsla-tesla-model-s-apple-aapl-iphone[4]The ability to unlock and start a Model S with an iPhone is a feature being added in the vehicle’s OS 6.0 software update. This update is reportedly in its late beta stages and will be released soon. After the update is released, devices running Google’s (GOOG[5]) Android are expected to be able to do the same with a Model S, reports International Business Times.

Reports claim that the Tesla app to start and unlock your Model S will use the iPhone’s Touch ID feature to scan a person’s fingerprints. This will allow users to use their iPhone to start and unlock their Model S cars without having to worry about thieves using it to steal the vehicle, International Business Times notes.

Other new features being added in the OS 6.0 software update for the Tesla Model S include a calender app for use in the car and better map and navigation software, reports TechCrunch[6].
