The announcement by China currency officials that the peg between the US dollar and Chinese yuan or renminbi has been loosened gave global stock markets a significant boost today. But labor unrest in China, particularly in the auto manufacturing sector with Honda (HMC) and Toyota (TM), could constrain the effect of the government's action on the China yuan currency exchange rate.
NRG Buys US Solar Project Pipeline (NRG, FSLR, WFR, SPWRA)
NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) has agreed to buy the project pipeline of US Solar, which is an affiliate of Arclight Capital Partners LLC, for an undisclosed amount. According to NRG, the purchase nearly doubles the company's solar development projects to 1,150 megawatts. Nine projects are involved in the acquisition, ranging in size from 20 megawatts to 99 megawatts, and all could be in operation between 2011 and 2013.
Grocery Store Stocks Downgraded on Stiffer Competition (SWY, KR, WMT, COST, BJ)
The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) supermarket chain reported first quarter earnings that beat analysts' expectations and the company was rewarded with a downgrade from Bank of America Merrill Lynch from 'neutral' to 'underperform'. Grocer Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) received the same ratings downgrade.
Bank Stocks Consider Killing Free Checking (BAC, JPM, WFC, CHCO, TCB, RF)
Major financial stocks like Bank of America (BAC), JP morgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (Citi) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are considering charging for checking accounts. After the financial crisis, these stocks had to reduce their risk. That means fewer bad customers subsidizing checking accounts with bank charges and other fees.
Walmart (WMT) Plans Smaller Stores for Chicago
The Chicago City Council has been fighting with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) for six years over the retailer's plan to open five Supercenters in Chicago's inner city. But now smaller Walmart store locations could be in the work as the retail stock branches out without its Supercenter model and embraces more reasonable sizes for urban locations.
