Amazon Kindle Wi-FiSources tell TechCrunch that fans of Amazon’s (AMZN) Paperwhite e-book reader will see a new version of the device launch next year.

The next Paperwhite will feature a display with a 300 pixel-per-inch (PPI) resolution, up from 212 PPI on the current version. The new Paperwhite is also said to be lighter than the existing model and feature matte glass flush with case edges, in place of recessed plastic. It will also reportedly feature a new custom-designed font to improve readability, as well as an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust screen brightness optimal levels.

Dubbed Ice Wine, the upgraded Paperwhite is planned for launch during the second quarter of 2014. It is meant to more effectively compete with e-readers like the Kobo Aura HD, which has a higher resolution compared to the current Paperwhite.

In September, Amazon launched the next generation versions of its Kindle tablets.

Amazon has been offering retailers discounts and a cut of Kindle e-book sales in order to get them to carry its Kindle tablets, which are less available than rival tablets.

Shares of Amazon climbed more than 1% in Monday morning trading.
