Celebrity Twitter Accounts – Famous First Tweets of 2013

Twitter (TWTR) was no stranger to the spotlight in 2013, as the startup’s highly anticipated November IPO turned heads on Wall Street.

celebrity-twitter-first-tweetBut there wasn’t just buzz around Twitter stock; the social media platform itself was also the place where lots of buzz began over the course of the year. Anything big-time news broke — whether that meant Miley Cyrus twerking, tragic and unexpected deaths or a royal birth — entertaining celebrity tweets and a Twitter trending topic were sure to follow.

And anytime a new celebrity Twitter account was created, that became big-time news as well. George H.W. Bush, for one, penned his first tweet last week. Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook also turned heads with his first tweet in 2013, while celebrity Twitter accounts from Hollywood stars Drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes and Cameron Diaz surfaced as well.

No wonder teens seem to be choosing Twitter over rival platform Facebook (FB), where users are more likely to get updates from a celebrity’s PR team or a friend request from their grandparents.

Let’s take a look at a few newly minted celebrity Twitter accounts from 2013 that upped the social media platform’s cool factor and resulted in famous first tweets.

Celebrity Twitter Account – Pope Francis

Pope Francis Twitter: @Pontifex

Pope Francis First Tweet:

We might not usually think of the Pope as a stereotypical celebrity, but @Pontifex has become a celebrity Twitter account since Pope Francis took the reins (or the keyboard) back in March.

While the first tweet that appears on the Pope Francis Twitter timeline now is the one shown above, the account also tweeted “HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM” a few days prior, which translates to: “We have Pope Francis.”

Of course, the Pope Francis Twitter doesn’t spew off your typical celebrity tweets — as we would hope from the Pope. One recent tweet read: “Confessing our sins may be difficult for us, but it brings us peace. We are sinners, and we need God’s forgiveness.”

Celebrity Twitter Account –  Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth Twitter: @LiamHemsworth

Liam Hemsworth First Tweet:

Liam Hemsworth had one hell of a year between his called of engagement with a newly risque Miley Cyrus and the more recent premier of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But Hemsworth still found time to join the celebrity Twitter circle over the summer.

His celebrity tweets mostly thanked fans for following at first (although the 766,000 or so Liam Hemsworth Twitter followers is far behind the number of folks following the Pope Francis Twitter). Since then, he has mostly promoted his films. In fact, this celebrity Twitter account is decked out in Hunger Games images.

Celebrity Twitter Account – Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett Twitter: @WarrenBuffett

Warren Buffett  First Tweet:

If you ask me, this celebrity Twitter account has the best first tweet by far. Unfortunately, the Warren Buffett Twitter experience since then has been a pretty giant disappointment. Not counting his first tweet, Buffett has only tweeted twice.

Sure, the most recent of his celebrity tweets was an awesome photo of Buffett dressed up as Walter White from Breaking Bad. But the more entertaining the Warren Buffett Twitter account gets, the more I wish he would up his social media frequency.

Celebrity Twitter Account – Megan Fox

Megan Fox Twitter: @meganfox

Megan Fox First Tweet:

Megan Fox may have been late to the celebrity Twitter party (as her first tweet admits), but she was one of the first to pull the trigger in 2013. The bad news for Megan Fox fans: Celebrity tweets from the actress and model were short-lived.

The first tweet from the Megan Fox Twitter account came on Jan. 3. Less than a week later, Fox tweeted that she had yet to discern the purpose of the social media platform. We haven’t heard from the Megan Fox Twitter account since.

Celebrity Twitter Account – Hillary Clinton (Yes, and Bill Clinton)

Hillary Clinton Twitter: @HillaryClinton

Hillary Clinton First Tweet:

We turn to politics for our next celebrity Twitter account — and one that has been notably more active. In June, a Hillary Clinton Twitter surfaced, with the first tweet using the hashtag #tweetsfromhillary and referencing the creators of “Texts from Hillary.”

The description for the Hillary Clinton Twitter is killer as well, reading: “Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, US Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD…”

Of course, her husband still beat her to the punch. He began sending out celebrity tweets in April, after Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome) set up an account for him. The Bill Clinton Twitter originally had the handle @PrezBillyJeff, but that has since been replaced by a much tamer @BillClinton.

Celebrity Twitter Account – Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens Twitter: @VanessaHudgens

Vanessa Hudgens First Tweet:

If you want frequency and personality in celebrity tweets, the Vanessa Hudgens Twitter account is your best bet. Hudgens — the High School Musical and Spring Breakers star — tweets far more often than those behind the other new celebrity Twitter accounts.

Plus, she often posts links to her Tumblr, which she created around the same time (April 2013). The Tumblr account basically includes day-to-day updates of the star’s life, including photos from her recent birthday party.
