The new tool, called “Global Fishing Watch”, was shown off at the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney. The tool is part of an effort between Google and Oceana, a conservationist and advocacy organization, to help combat illegal fishing with the help of satellites, reports The Verge.

The Global Fishing Watch uses data collected from SpaceQuest satellites and software from SkyTruth to track fishing ships. The current version of the Google tool showed information regarding 25,000 ships from 2012 to 2013. The aim is to upgrade the system so that authorities can use it to respond to illegal fishing quicker, The Verge notes.

“So much of what happens out on the high seas is invisible, and that has been a huge barrier to understanding and showing the world what’s at stake for the ocean,” John Amos, president of SkyTruth, told Cnet. “But now, satellite data is allowing us to make human interaction with the ocean more transparent than ever before.”
