Yahoo (YHOO) will soon be the default search engine for users of Mozilla’s Firefox web browser.

yahoo-google-mozilla-firefox-goog-yhooYahoo and Mozilla signed a deal on Wednesday that will have it being the default search engine for Firefox in the U.S. for the next five years. The deal comes as a similar agreement between Mozilla and Google (GOOG) will expire at the end of this month, reports the Associated Press.

The change from Google to Yahoo as the default search engine for Firefox isn’t unexpected. Google Chrome launched in 2008 and has been outperforming Firefox. The introduction of the web browser has caused tension between the two companies that made it unlikely they would renew their agreement, the Associated Press notes.

“Search is a core part of the online experience for everyone, with Firefox users alone searching the Web more than 100 billion times per year globally,” Mozilla CEO Chris Beard said in a statement. “Our new search strategy doubles down on our commitment to make Firefox a browser for everyone, with more choice and opportunity for innovation.”

YHOO shares were up 1% as of Thursday afternoon. GOOG shares were down slightly.
