Google (GOOG) announced that it will be shutting down its offices in Russia.

GoogleThe move was made as Internet freedom in Russia continues to disappear. The government has added more restrictions to the Web, prompting Google to close its doors in the Asian/European nation.

Russian president Vladimir Putin calls the Internet a “CIA project.” Internet inventor Tim Berners-Lee responded to the president’s comments by assuring him that the Web can be “used for good and evil.”

A spokeswoman for Google Russia declined to comment on the motives behind the closing. The company will still have support and a marketing staff in the country.

GOOG stock is down 1.83% Friday afternoon.
