An app that will be released around the same time as the Apple Watch will allow users to check their sugar levels. The app requires the users of the device to have a small sensors implanted slightly below their skin. This senor will report sugar levels every five minutes and can display it on the wearable device, reports Cnet.

The Apple Watch app is made by DexCom. DexCom will be able to release the app easier thanks to changes in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s guidelines. These changes make it so that apps that only display health information aren’t considered Class III, Cnet notes.

Apple Watch could benefit from being able to monitor sugar levels. It’s estimated that there are currently 400 million people in the world with Type II diabetes. The cost connected to this is around $376 billion a year. The addition of the $300 device could offer a cheaper alternatives to some for monitoring their sugar levels, reports Gigaom.
