The study found that people who compare their lives to their friends’ on Facebook fall into depression while doing so. Comparing lives to other friends can lead to jealousy and doesn’t just last while on the social media website. The study found that users were most affected by this when viewing a friend’s new purchase, such as a  house or car, or vacation, reports Daily Mail.

The Facebook depression study was conduction by researchers at the University of Missouri and included 700 people. Researchers behind the study advise users not to fall into the habits of comparing lives and should know that many only post the positive to the social media service, Daily Mail notes.

Researcher behind the Facebook study referred to the act of monitoring the accomplishments of a friends life on the service as “surveillance use”. They found that users that didn’t do this and only used the platform to stay connected to friends didn’t show signs of depression from the service, reports The Telegraph.
