Google Ramping Up Glass Production

The glasses are expected to launch next year

Google GlassSources tell the Financial Times that Google (GOOG) is moving to boost production of its high-tech headgear in time for the holiday shopping season.

While Google Glass headsets won’t hit store shelves until 2014, the company has already distributed about 10,000 units to technology fans and developers. Google also recently announced that it will allow current Google Glass owners to extend invitations to up to three other people, allowing them to purchase the glasses before the general rollout.

The invitation system is expected to be implemented over the next month or so.

Google says that allowing more early adopters to get their hands on the glasses — which feature a camera, microphone and LCD screen — will allow it to gather additional feedback with which to improve the product prior to a general launch.

Earlier this year, Google began distributing the glasses to about 8,000 winners of a competition.

The glasses’ ability to capture video, take photos and record audio has drawn criticism from some lawmakers and privacy advocates.

Shares of Google rose fractionally in Tuesday morning trading.
