Proterra electric bus just broke the world record for distance by an electric vehicle on a single charge.

The vehicle traveled a total of 1,101.2 miles (1,772.2km) at the Navistar Proving Grounds in Indiana, breaking the record that was held by an experimental single-seat EV.

The Proterra Catalyst E2 max holds 660kWh of storage, amounting to roughly 11 Chevy Bolts. The move further proves that electric vehicle technology could be the future of the transportation business.

“For our heavy-duty electric bus to break the previous world record of 1,013.76 miles — which was set by a light-duty passenger EV 46 times lighter than the Catalyst E2 max — is a major feat,” Matt Horton, Proterra’s chief commercial officer, said in the news release.

Everyone from bus drivers to truck drivers could soon be driving a Proterra vehicle in order to transport people or items over a long distance without having to stop. It would take a long time to charge the vehicle, but charging could be done once the route was completed thanks to its ability to travel lengthy roads.

Despite this impressive feat, there are no bus services that are currently using the Proterra bus. However, the company did agree to supply Foothill Transit in Southern California with a smaller version of the vehicle, offering a 350-mile range.

There are currently hybrid garbage trucks that are on the road.
