Firefox Update: 6 Things to Know About the New Quantum Browser

Mozilla Firefox has not been the most popular browser for a while, but the company is hoping to reverse its fortunes.

FirefoxThe company recently announced an update on the browser called the Firefox Quantum, and it is designed to help close the gap between it and the Google Chrome. Here are six things to know about it:

  • Firefox upstaged Internet Explorer after its 2004 released, becoming the top browser in the world. Firefox only makes up about 6% of browser usage today, compared with 55% for Chrome, plus Safari holds 15% of the usage. In personal computers, Mozilla has 13% of it.
  • The company said that the browser has risen in popularity over the last years as 100 million users are browsing through Firefox on a daily basis now. Mozilla hopes to increase this mark.
  • The Firefox Quantum is incredibly fast as version 57 of the open-source browser is twice as fast as the Firefox 52 update from March, according to the Speedometer 2.0.
  • Mozilla also made some improvements in the functionality of algorithms within the browser as Firefox now allows users to make payments in an easier manner, while virtual reality has also improved under the browser, as well as WebAssembly-powered games.
  • The Firefox Developer Edition has been a hit for web programmers as usage of it has more than doubled since the Firefox 57 update in September.
  • The Firefox update also has a new, sleeker look to it.
