Legendary rocker Neil Young is looking to launch a new super-high quality music player and fans jumped at the chance to help finance the venture.
Young turned to crowd-funding platform Kickstarter to amass funding for Pono Music, a digital music player that will provide higher quality sound than conventional MP3 players like Apple
’s (AAPL) iPod or smartphones.
Music fans responded enthusiastically to the pitch. Though Pono Music had a goal of raising $800,000, it exceeded that within 24 hours. By the time the Kickstarter campaign expired earlier this week, it had raised a whopping $6.2 million, becoming KickStarter’s third-largest fundraising campaign ever, CNN notes.
Here are 4 things to know about Pono:
- Music on Pono will be streamed in 24-bit, 192-kHz sound, higher than CD quality.
- The PonoPlayer device will feature 128GB of storage.
- Pono will include the PonoPlayer and a web-based music store, which will sell high-quality versions of albums from all major record labels for expected prices between $15 and $25.
- The PonoPlayer will sell for $399.
