Up 56% year-to-date, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock could prove to be a winning idea among 5G-related equities. Qualcomm is at the epicenter of the 5G upgrade cycle. Remember, if an investor is willing to bet on Apple as a 5G upgrade play, and it's not a bad wager to consider, Qualcomm certainly merits consideration because it's the dominant producer of 5G modem chips handset makers need.

There's another history lesson to go along with those chip-related factoids: when new decades start, as is going to happen on Jan. 1, the prior decade's leadership group often don't retain those top perches. That doesn't AMD and other chip stocks won't perform well in 2020 or over the next 10 years, but it does imply that when we're having this conversation in late 2029, we probably won't be talking about semiconductors as the best-performing industry group of that decade.
