Votizen: Facebook Meets American Elections

Sean Parker was a key player in the early days of breakout companies like Napster, Facebook and Spotify. Now, it looks like he wants to turn politics upside down.

According to All Things Digital, Sean recently participated in a $750,000 round of financing for Votizen, an online network that tracks registered voters and allows them to interact with one another. Other investors included Lady Gaga and Ashton Kutcher.

Votizen, founded a couple years ago, has been processing about 200 million U.S. voting records. The company’s goal is to essentially create an active database of profiles that will allow voters to connect to each other to talk, learn and take action. To help things along, Votizen also has integrated with major social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD).

All in all, the idea seems fairly interesting. However, traditional social networks already have provided a strong platform for politics, evidenced in movements like the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street. So it will be interesting to see whether the company’s focus on engaged voters will be enough to separate itself from the rest of the pack
