Hotel Swaps Bibles for Kindles

If you’re traveling around the U.K. and spend an evening at the Hotel Indigo in Newcastle, you won’t find a Bible on your night stand.  Instead, the hotel is supplying its customers with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle e-readers pre-loaded with the Bible, The Telegraph reports.

The service is an experiment, but if it is deemed successful, the concept could expand to other hotels.

Hotel Indigo will allow guests to download a copy of other religious texts — not to exceed about $5 in value. Customers can also use the Kindles to read other books, but the cost will be added to the guests’ bills — just like using the hotel television to watch a movie.

The effort is not affiliated with The Gideons International, a Christian organization which has placed Bibles in hotel rooms since 1908. Overall, the Gideons have distributed more than 1.7 billion complete Bibles and New Testaments in more than 190 countries around the world.
