The apology is in response to buyer’s frustration concerning a software patch that must be installed before some features can be used. Download and installation times for the patch, which is more than one gigabyte, can take several hours, depending on the purchasers home bandwidth, reports ITProPortal.

In his apology, Iwata said, “Personally I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box. So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch.”

The patch contains updates to the system’s online shop and social network. It also controls the the Wii U’s ability to handle backwards compatibility — allowing the new console to play games for the original Wii. It also deals with issues concerning Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), YouTube (NASDAQ:GOOG) and other video applications.
