Microsoft (MSFT) is planning a new set of updates to its Windows 8 operating system that will restore more of the traditional desktop interface that millions have been pining for.

The new release being is code-named “Threshold.” In a concession to PC users, the Metro tile interface — which made sense on touchscreen devices, but infuriated traditional non-touchscreen PC users — will be made optional, while the Start Menu will also be included as an option, Supersite for Windows notes.

Familiar to PC users for almost two decades, the Start Button was initially dumped from Windows 8. Microsoft restored it with the Windows 8.1 update after receiving a wave of criticism from users.

The updated OS will ship in three versions, including an Enterprise version, a traditional desktop release and a Windows RT-like version for consumers.

Threshold apparently contains features that are designed to move toward a consolidation of the Windows OS across desktops, tablets, smartphones and the Xbox gaming console.

Shares of Microsoft fell modestly in Tuesday morning trading.
