More broadly, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.7%, the Nasdaq fell 0.9% and the S&P 500 declined 0.7%.

Some of the biggest gainers among basic materials stocks include:

• Silver Wheaton Corp (SLW): SLW stock is up 2.3%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has increased.

• Sasol Ltd (SSL): SSL stock is up 1.0% today.

• Hecla Mining Company (HL): HL stock is up 1.0%, marking the sixth consecutive day the stock has increased.

• Newmont Mining Corp (NEM): NEM stock is up 0.9%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has increased.

• Ternium S.A. (TX): TX stock is up 0.7% today.

• Greif Bros. Corp (GEF): GEF stock is up 0.6% today.

• Kronos Worldwide Inc (KRO): KRO stock is up 0.6% today.

• Cameco Corp (CCJ): CCJ stock is up 0.6% today.

• Compania Mina Buenaventura S.A. (BVN): BVN stock is up 0.5% today.

• Greif Bros. Corp (GEF.B): GEF.B stock is up 0.2% today.

• Intrepid Potash Inc (IPI): IPI stock is down 2.4% today.

• Air Products and Chemicals (APD): APD stock is down 2.0% today.

• RBC Bearings Inc (ROLL): ROLL stock is down 1.9%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Albany International Corp (AIN): AIN stock is down 1.9%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Berry Plastics Group Inc (BERY): BERY stock is down 1.9% today on 2 times normal volume.

• Polyone Corp (POL): POL stock is down 1.8%, marking the fourth consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Huntsman Corp (HUN): HUN stock is down 1.8% today.

• Bhp Billiton Plc (BBL): BBL stock is down 1.7% today.

• Bhp Billiton Limited (BHP): BHP stock is down 1.7%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE): GPRE stock is down 1.7% today.
