Some companies get a second chance at stardom, while others fade away into the night.

BlackBerry (BBRY) Has a Golden Opportunity to Cash InIt appears BlackBerry (BBRY) is one of the lucky ones.

CEO John Chen is leading the charge, the once dominant smartphone company is hot on the comeback trail, with BBRY stock up some 45% so far this year.

Still, if BBRY is truly going to make a move in the smartphone market, it needs one device it can hang its hat on — something that can compete toe to toe with the Apple (AAPL) iPhone and other big-time players.

And that device might just be the Passport.

When well-known tech blog The Verge asked readers to vote on which smartphone has them the most excited, it seemed safe to assume that most were expecting the iPhone 6 to take the cake.

But it’s the BlackBerry Passport that’s getting the love.

As of this writing, 38,113 votes were tallied, and 46% of them (17,827) said the Passport is the most exciting new smartphone this month. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus combined for just 15% of the vote, followed closely by Motorola’s Moto X/Moto G with 14%.

That’s right. According to voters, BlackBerry is way more exciting than the iPhone 6.

Does It Mean Anything?

OK, so one user survey doesn’t mean the BlackBerry Passport will dominate the iPhone 6, nor does it mean that BBRY will ride the Passport back to the top of the industry.

But it does show that there’s still some support out there for BlackBerry, and think the Passport is a great next step.

BlackBerry has a golden opportunity to make a move in the smartphone industry. If the Passport is able to live up to the hype, it might not be long before the company is once again in the middle of the action.

As of this writing, Chris Bibey did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
