More broadly, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.9%, the Nasdaq was up 1.0% and the S&P 500 increased 0.9%.

Some of the biggest gainers among basic materials stocks include:

• Carpenter Technology Corp (CRS): CRS stock is up 7.9% today.

• Domtar Corp (UFS): UFS stock is up 7.7% today.

• Parker-Hannifin Corp (PH): PH stock is up 6.9% today.

• Clearwater Paper Corp (CLW): CLW stock is up 4.1% today.

• Murphy USA Inc. Common Stock Wh (MUSA): MUSA stock is up 3.1% today.

• Hudbay Minerals Inc (HBM): HBM stock is up 2.4% today.

• Albemarle Corp (ALB): ALB stock is up 2.1% today.

• Trex Company (TREX): TREX stock is up 1.9% today.

• Dover Corp (DOV): DOV stock is up 1.8% today.

• United States Steel Corp (X): X stock is up 1.7% today.

Some of the biggest losers among basic materials stocks include:

• Cliffs Natural Resources Inc (CLF): CLF stock is down 4.3% today and down 30.1% in the last month.

• Precision Castparts Corp (PCP): PCP stock is down 3.4% today.

• Bemis Company (BMS): BMS stock is down 3.3% today.

• Kinross Gold Corp (KGC): KGC stock is down 3.2%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Nucor Corp (NUE): NUE stock is down 2.4% today.

• Sinopec Shangai Petrochemical Company Ltd (SHI): SHI stock is down 2.2%, marking the third consecutive day the stock has decreased.

• Compania Mina Buenaventura S.A. (BVN): BVN stock is down 1.5% today.

• Reliance Steel & Aluminum Company (RS): RS stock is down 1.8% today.

• Royal Gold (RGLD): RGLD stock is down 1.7% today.

• Newmont Mining Corp (NEM): NEM stock is down 1.5% today.
