Facebook (FB) has launched a new “Places Directory” that works similar to Yelp (YELP).

The new Facebook Places Directory allows users to search for restaurants and other locations in cities. The service has users first selecting what city they want to search in and then allows them to look up destinations and locations from there, reports Search Engine Land.

The service uses several of Facebook’s features, such as Graph Search and Page Locations API, to handle its tasks. The system isn’t quite perfect yet as it still has a hard time understanding searches and sometimes doesn’t recognize local restaurants that have profile pages on the social media website, Search Engine Land notes.

The Facebook Places Directory also allows users to see what people in their network are saying about local business and places that they’ve searched. This could give it an advantage over Yelp as the reviews are coming from people they know rather than random users, NDTV notes.

FB shares were down slightly as of Thursday afternoon.
