Woman Charged With Fraud Over Fake McDonald’s Coffee Burns

A woman based in California falsely claimed that a McDonald’s (MCD) coffee burned her skin and now she’s paying the price.

McDonald's

Victorville resident Selena Edwards attempted to sue the burger chain using images of her burnt skin to a court, but the pictures had nothing to do with her and now she must face a number of charges.

She claimed that she got a coffee from the drive-thru and the lid came loose, causing her second-degree burns. Edwards used images from a hospital’s website to strengthen her fake McDonald’s coffee burns story.

However, the pictures were discovered and the California woman is facing 21 felony counts of insurance and workers’ compensation fraud.

“By copying legitimate burn photos from the internet, Edwards attempted to make a profit from another person’s pain and suffering and for this she will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” said California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.

MCD stock is up 0.2% Wednesday afternoon.
