Facebook’s (FB) Instagram is cleansing itself of spam users.

instagram-deleting-accounts-lost-followersInstagram’s decision to remove spam accounts has resulted in millions being deleted. This has caused several of the website’s top users to lose a large amount of their followers. Included in this list is Justin Bieber, who lost over 3.5 million followers, and Akon, who lost 56% of his followers, reports BBC News.

Following the cleansing of spam accounts on Instagram, there’s a new number one user. Kim Kardashian now has the most followers on the service. The previous holder of this title was Justin Bieber, but the cleansing killed close to 15% of his followers, Design & Trend notes.

Instagram alerted users that it would be conducting the cleansing in a blog post earlier this month. It said that it was doing this to remove spam accounts and that all accounts deleted were gone for good. Despite this, users complained about the lost followers, reports BBC News.
