Now that 2014 is coming to a close, Twitter (TWTR) is looking back at its top Twitter trends and Tweets of the year.
According to Twitter Chief Communications Officer Gabriel Stricker, there are over 500 million Tweets made everyday. These Tweets comes together to create some of the top Twitter trends with the help of hashtags.
Here are the top Twitter trends of 2014.
- Oscars — The celebrity-filled photo snapped at the 2014 Oscars with Ellen Degeneres is this year’s most Retweeted Tweet.
- World Cup — The World Cup was a huge event on Twitter this year with over 672 million Tweets posted.
- #BringBackOurGirls — After a huge kidnapping in Nigeria, this hashtag quickly spread across the world.
- #IndyRef — This hashtag was used by Scottish citizens to voice their opinions on separating from the United Kingdom.
- Hong Kong Protests — News of these protests regarding governmental electoral reforms quickly spread across the world.
