Now that 2014 is coming to a close, Twitter (TWTR) is looking back at its top Twitter trends and Tweets of the year.

Here are the top Twitter trends of 2014.

  • Oscars — The celebrity-filled photo snapped at the 2014 Oscars with Ellen Degeneres is this year’s most Retweeted Tweet.
  • World Cup —  The World Cup was a huge event on Twitter this year with over 672 million Tweets posted.
  • #BringBackOurGirls — After a huge kidnapping in Nigeria, this hashtag quickly spread across the world.
  • #IndyRef — This hashtag was used by Scottish citizens to voice their opinions on separating from the United Kingdom.
  • Hong Kong Protests — News of these protests regarding governmental electoral reforms quickly spread across the world.
