The changes to Facebook make it so that users will see less viral hoaxes in their News Feeds depending on how those stories are reported. If many users choose to mark a viral hoax as such, News Feed will take that into account and the article will be given less distribution.

Users that share viral hoaxes on their New Feeds may also have an annotation appear under their link to let them know that the article is a hoax. This helps inform the user of the hoax and may result in them deleting it from their News Feed.

Facebook says that it won’t be removing viral hoaxes from users’ News Feeds. However, it did say that users are more likely to clear the content out on their own News Feed once they become aware of the fact that it’s a viral hoax.

FB shares were up slightly as of Wednesday afternoon.
